- Warranty and recall work handled in-house
- Brand-specific training and diagnostic tools
Independent garage advantages
- Lower labour rates and more competitive parts pricing
- Flexible approach — often more willing to discuss options
- Personal relationship with a local business
- Many offer the same quality of work at a lower price
When to use a main dealer
Warranty repairs, safety recalls and complex electronic faults on newer cars are often best handled by the dealer. If your car is still under manufacturer warranty and a fault is covered, the dealer is the straightforward route. They will also update your digital service history without question.
When an independent makes sense
Routine servicing, MOTs, brakes, tyres and general repairs are the bread and butter of good independents. For an older car out of warranty, an independent often delivers the same outcome for less. Ask the questions to ask before booking and compare garage quotes from both.
You can mix both
Many drivers MOT and service with a trusted independent and use the main dealer only for warranty work or specialist faults. There is no rule that says you must pick one forever. Start with how to choose a garage and build a shortlist of both types in your area.
Frequently asked questions
- Will using an independent void my warranty?
- EU block exemption rules mean you can use any garage for servicing during the manufacturer's warranty period, provided they use appropriate parts and follow the service schedule. The garage must be competent — keep invoices as proof.
- Are main dealers always more expensive?
- Usually, yes — labour rates and parts margins tend to be higher. But for warranty repairs, recalls and some complex electronic faults, the main dealer may be the only practical option.
- Do independents have the right tools for modern cars?
- Many do. Look for manufacturer accreditations, diagnostic equipment and evidence of ongoing training. For specialist brands or complex faults, a main dealer may still have the edge.
