Dashboard warning lights
- Red oil light — stop and check oil level; do not drive if it stays on
- Engine management light — book a diagnostic check; could be minor or serious
- Brake warning light — check handbrake first; if it persists, do not drive
- Service reminder (spanner) — routine service is due
Noises and vibrations
Squealing brakes, knocking from the engine bay, grinding when changing gear or vibration through the steering wheel all suggest something needs attention. Some noises are cheap to fix early and expensive if ignored — a worn brake pad becomes a scored disc, for example.
Performance changes
- Harder to start, especially on cold mornings
- Pulling to one side when driving straight
- Using more fuel than usual
- Sluggish acceleration or rough idling
- Smoke from the exhaust (blue, black or excessive white)
Smells and leaks
A sweet smell may indicate coolant leaking. A burning smell could be oil on hot components. Puddles under the car after parking — note the colour and mention it when you book. Clear fluid is usually air conditioning condensation; oil, coolant or brake fluid needs investigation.
What to do next
Do not ignore symptoms until the next MOT. Book a service or diagnostic check with a garage you trust. See how to choose a garage, read understanding garage quotes before agreeing to work, and check how often should I service my car for routine intervals.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a service light the same as a warning light?
- A service reminder (often a spanner icon) means routine maintenance is due — book a service soon. Red warning lights (oil, brake, temperature) mean stop as soon as it is safe and seek help immediately.
- Can I wait until my MOT if the car seems fine?
- An MOT only checks legal safety standards, not general wear. If your service is overdue or you notice symptoms, book a service separately. Do not rely on the MOT to catch everything.
